Update on rural police stations in the Omagh District Council area
27 March 2012
A RECOMMENDATION to retain the Beragh PSNI station while closing the one in Fintona is to be put before the Policing Board later this spring.
Ulster Unionist MLA and Policing Board Member Ross Hussey said
'I am disappointed that we have not been able to retain the services of both Beragh and Fintona stations but the fact that a recommendation to retain one of the stations has been made is positive. The public feeling is that we need to have police in rural areas, and I also believe that we cannot assume that the Terrorist threat has 'gone away'. To have closed both stations would have left the Omagh District Council area with one centrally located station which to my mind would have left the rural area totally isolated. The recommendation of course now has to go to the relevant Assistant Chief Constable and then he will make a recommendation to the Policing Board so no decision is yet 'set in stone' but I certainly will be supporting the recommendation to retain Beragh Police Station when the matter comes forward for debate.
